Anyone else have fungus on squash leaves?

I've searched several forums but can't find any postings on this topic. For the first time in NJ, several leaves of several squash plants are covered in white moldy spots. (I don't handle anything wet so I don't think I've spread it.) I used home cooked compost, humus, leaves, grass, etc. to build the garden over cardboard. Could it have been something in my soil? Squash is producing great and plants are healthy in general. I've just been cutting them off and destroying them. Reluctant to use chemicals. If it keeps spreading, will I ultimately have to cut off too many leaves and kill the plant? Should I just leave them alone if I don't want to spray and take my chances? P.S. My garden is crowded but it doesn't seem to have spread to anything else but is that part of the problem, overcrowding? Thanks for any and all advice.
