Blueberries are deciduous plants; leaves and growth during the warm months, dormancy during the cold months. Blueberries are native to NJ, growing wild in the Pine Barrens in Ocean and Burlington Counties. I would plant my blueberry bush in my garden. If you cannot, transplant the plant into a larger (next size) container and fertilize. Sand is great for drainage but has little nutritional value.

Thank you. Our soil is high in clay and very dense - hence the use of a pot. Do you think the plant will be fine in clay soil? I'd love to just put it in the ground and see what happens.

All North Jersey is clay. Treat your blueberry as a shrub. A high bush will grow to about 8 ft. and the low bush may get to between 2 and 3 ft. Blueberries need full sun and an acid soil. If you have any azaleas, rhododendron or evergreens, plant them closeby. Blue berries have shallow roots. Prepare the area by digging a hole much larger than needed. The soil should be sandy but an acid loam with plenty of organic matter. Mulch and water during hot an dry weather. Keep your potted blueberry in its pot until early fall(September) and than transplant.
