Help with Black Knight butterfly bushes

Posted by outinthestix NJ (My Page) on

Over the course of the last month most of the leaves of my black knight butterfly bushes have fallen off. They seem to get brown stained spots, turn yellow, wither and die. I thought that maybe it was insects but after 2 applications of seven I still have the problem. My nieghbors are having the same problem. None of the other 2 varieties of butterfly bushes i have seem to be affected just the black Knights...any ideas?

Just a guess, but it might be mites. My Black Knight looks horrendous, yet my white & Pink Delight look spectacular. I also had mite problems with Sungold, which I replaced with Black Knight. Harsh spraying with the hose, especially underneath the leaves, will rid the bush of the mites. Do this every day for about a week. I think that's what I had done with my Sungold and did earlier this summer on the Black Knight. I've never had any major problems with insects on the majority of my buddleias, just a few JB's, and don't use pesticides.

Thank you for the reply Tracy, I took a sample of the bush down to our local agway store. They thought that it was a blight of some kind rather than mites. They suggested that i contact the Warren cty. agricultural extension and see if the had any ideas. I'll keep the forum posted.
