Privet Hedge

I have two large Privet trees(Ligustrum amurense), ten to fifteen feet high and over fifty years old. This year for the first time, the leaves do not have as dense a growth as in past years. As well, on both trees/bushes some of the leaves seem to have dried out and are brittle to the touch although they are still green. They simply crack apart. They get plenty of water, so the long periods without rain this summer should not be the problem. I have never added fertilizer to the ground below the privets as they always did just fine on their own. Our soil is sandy as we are on a coastal island off New Jersey.

Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?
