I have a flowering plum tree in my front yard that has a lot of sap comming from the base and large branches of the tree. Should I be concerned with this?

Also, I'm looking to prune the tree this winter to get into a better shape, how hard can I prune it back? Every time I cut the grass with my riding mower I have to run under leaves and it get very anoying.

Thank for any help

You might want to post this question in the Trees forum.

As for the branches, perhaps kill the grass under the tree such that you don't have to get so close to it. Just create a bigger mulch area than what you have currently under the tree. Grass is just competition for the trees roots anyway.
