Grass Seed

| I am looking to plant some grass and have been reading the lawn forums here. Does anyone know a place to buy "sod quality" grass seed in NJ or nearby NY, PA by named variety (I'm not looking for prepackaged mixes)? Also, does anyone know a place where the public can observe some lawn trials? I'm sure Rutgers has them. |

| Try Roork's. They are on Hwy 77 south of Pole Tavern. |

| Your timing is perfect; autumn is the best time to renovate your lawn. Not knowing where in NJ you are, I cannot hope to recommend a good seed source near you, however your County Office of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension should be able to help. If you have a County Master Gardener program, through the Coop. Ext., give them a call. Yes, Rutgers has some turf trials, but, again I'll refer you to your County Extension/Master Gardeners for some guidance there, as I don't know which ones would be available for observation and near you. Below is a link for the Rutgers Agricultural Experiment Station website. I think you'll find a lot there, but just to get you started: In the right sidebar is a link to a listing of Cooperative Extension County Offices. In the left sidebar is a "Lawn & Garden" section - click on that and you'll have access to garden and lawn publications and in the left sidebar under "Facilities" you might be interested in some of the research farms. (I've been working at Snyder this summer ... but not on turfgrass.) If you haven't already done so, I would strongly suggest you have a soil test done. Your Master Gardeners will do a pH test for free, and the Rutgers Soil Lab will do a comprehensive analysis of macro and micronutrients, as well as pH, for $15. |

| Thank you for the references, guys. I ended up ordering mail order today from Pawnee Buttes Seeds. They are making a custom mix for me. |

loretta: Which grass seeds (cultivars) did you buy? And what was the cost? |

Well, I didn't shop it much because I just wanted to get it done so I might have found better prices but...I got a mix of straight KBG - 1/2 Apollo and 1/2 Princeton 105. It was $6 something a pound plus $17 to ship. The area was small. I only got 12 pounds. I choose those because they were part of a list of shade tolerant KBG I found on the lawn forum and those were the two that company had. I know the protocol of mixing grasses for disease resistance and that the fescues are suppose to be better in shade, but I am trying this first, in case it works, because the area gets traffic and fescue isn't suppose to be good for that. Over at the lawn forum though, there is much talk about the "Magnificent Three" - Midnight or Midnight II, Moonlight and Bedazzled for the perfect, dark KBG look. I'll really just be happy to get something green. Search the term and you'll read a lot of banter about it. |
