I’ve trapped hundreds of bushy tailed tree rats the last 5 years. Looks like I’ve missed out on some good eating. From today’s NY Post

| The other white meat? Well, it's something to fall back on. That and Canadian Geese. |

Before you go off eating your squirrels, you might want to read this. "Some people have also been known to cook up road kill squirrels, which concerns Berger. A crazed squirrel may be more likely to dash into traffic and get killed." |
Here is a link that might be useful: Mad Squirrel Disease

| I grew up eating squirrel, and my mom would combine it with rabbit as you do need quite a few to make a meal. Now my son has begun hunting this year, so I need to dig up those recipes. It is surprising that the article refers to squirrel as an exotic animal. My family will get a kick out of that! |

| There is a hawk eating a squirrel in my front yard right now...that's a first. |

| Congratulations, Loretta! Could you please send that educated hawk down my way? The only thing the hawks seem to eat around here are morning doves, which doesn't help prevent my garden from being dug up or eaten by all the rodent types here! Leslie |

My husband said the hawk was in our yard a couple of days earlier with a squirrel. It could just be the cold weather but there are definitely less squirrels in my yard. Just this fall I was wondering about how the squirrel population was increasing. It was sad, actually. While the hawk was devouring the squirrel, just a few feet away, behind a tree, was another squirrel, clinging on very still but at attention. Later, after the hawk flew away with his prize, the squirrel was sniffing around the spot, probably missing a sibling. |

I’ve never seen a hawk here, it may sound a little cruel but I wish I had a ton of those Hawks in my area. We have a huge squirrel population, what we need are more predators as nature intended. Until then I’ll keep trapping, it definitely helps but it’s a never-ending battle. I live 1 mile west of the meadowlands, where are the Hawks? Maybe they have become accustomed to my daily deliveries? Wish I had a wife with the gumption to skin and cook them for me. Sure would save a bunch on chicken. |

| The hawk eating your squirrel Loretta was more than likely a Red Tail Hawk (buteo). Those that eat morning doves and other feeder birds are 'accipters', typically Sharp Shin Hawks or their larger cousin, the Coopers. Neither of which are capable (imo) of taking a squirrel (too much to handle). |

| kkfromnj, keep an eye out. The hawk population has really grown in my area, IMO. I see a lot of them. The other day, there was one, possibly the same one, sitting on the fence scoping out the bird feeder at my neighbor's kitchen window. I do have pictures of the hawk. I will post it later today. |
