It just occurred to me, while walking the dog this a.m., that the witch hazels are not in bloom yet? Too warm for November - or did I miss them totally? :)

Our red flowered witch hazel bloomed about a month ago but with yellow flowers. Very strange indeed and very early in the season. The other red flowered one is only forming buds now and so is the yellow flowered one near the pond these and the aforementioned red/yellow are Hamamelis × intermedia (H. japonica × H. mollis). We also have a H. Virginiana but I haven't looked at it closely mainly because it retains it's yellow (now)and brown leaves almost all winter. So your Hamamelis have prob. not bloomed yet.

I have cultivated sorts, one of each, Arnold Promise, Diane and Jelena and I don't recall that they can be expected to bloom until after Christmas here. Right now 2 of the 3 have a good number of round brown buds. Last year I think they bloomed in late January and Feb. and I am in zone 7. I only saw one native witchhazel when I was young and hardly knew enough to appreciate the autumn bloom.

I finally noticed a couple of the natives in bloom, but the bloom was not nearly as good as in past years. A friend told me last night that she has seen crocus in bloom in Massachusetts!
