They are supposed to be cold hardy to about a zone 8, so that while they would be okay in a mild winter, they would suffer in a bad winter. I have some in my back yard from March until some time in December. Then I protect it in a chilly but frost-free, sunny garage. (Don't forget about misting.) It still looks great outside at this time of the year what with all the rain, mist, and humidity. Our climate is certainly humid enough to maintain it but I haven't as yet done any cold tolerance experiments on mine. One thing I can tell you, they tend to hate life indoors in the average home. So if your choice is toastly warm inside or out in the cold, cruel world--go with the second option. Any time I have tried them inside they go into decline. Good luck!

Spanish moss from N.C. and VA. will survive into the low to mid single digits. Florida moss does not seem as hardy. Birds tend to snatch the moss for nesting material in spring. In other words, it disappears.

whatever, most of it is inside so i'll just hope for the best and bring the stuff outside in on unusually cold nights and next time im in the north carolina or virginia area i will definitely pick some up

I had some live a few years, just a small bit of it. The birds took 95% away and the remaing lived about 2 winters before I could no longer find anything. I got my batch from Ft.Lauderdale.

I left my moss outside completely this year. Usually, I bring it in (where it dies). I have to say, it really looks much better outside. Looks very alive despite the cold (though minimums haven't really gone below about 17 f.). Don't know if the birds are taking it for nests as there is still a quite a bit out there. Might be growing enough to make up the loss.
