big hole.......don't know what lives down there

I am a teacher. We have a garden at the school. Actually, we are GOING to have a garden, as past attempts pretty much failed because no one watered in the summer. Anyway, I hope to change that this year. The only concern is that, about 10 feet from the proposed garden, there is a huge hole in the ground. It is about a foot wide and goes down into darkness. It is behind some bushes and goes right down alongside the school. I have no clue what lives down there. I have never seen anything, but once I threw some branches over it and came back a few months later and noticed they were gone.

ground hog?
fox?.....Do foxes live in holes like that?

My initial thought was ground hog, but I have never seen one in that area. The ground hog by my house is always scampering around.

Groundhog. A fox would probably not be likely to keep the same den for months on end as they move around to protect the young ones. And I don't think they go deep into the ground - they'd rather be on a hillside where they can keep an eye out on what might be out there.

Unfortunately, our garden at school surrounded by a 10' fence is full of groundhogs, who either climb over the fence or tunnel under the wire that has been placed in the ground in a vain attempt to keep them at bay.

Thanks for your insight. Which county are you in? We are in Bergen.
