crape myrtles in zone 5 Quebec

I am a transplanted south carolinian. i love crape myrtles, their shape, their bark, and their wonderful flowers and buds. is there anyway to grow them here - perhaps in a pot brought inside or in a heated garage in the winter? is there anywhere to acquire one in canada? or will i just have to visit the south in the summer?

I have twice brought a crape myrtle to friends in Ithaca, NY from Maryland. Twice they planted in a protected spot, once they tried near the clothes dryer vent, and both times it died. They have the same feeling you do about these wonderful tree bushes- but no luck.

I also moved from South Carolina to Southern New England. I've been growing a Dynamite Red Crape Myrtle for 3 years and it's doing well. I have it on the South side of my house and it gets good warmth and sunlight. The downside is that I only get about 3-4 weeks of flowers in late August/early September. I bought it on ebay for $7 as a small twig and the trunk is about 2in now. I'm on the edge of zone 5/6. Technically 6a.
