| Hi! I am in dire need of some help! :) I am new to this chilly zone 3a climate, and am looking for a fast growing, hedge forming shrub - and heres the catch... the area they are to be planted in is in complete shade. Ideally I would like to have evergreens (that are very thick) ~ although at this point I am prepared to try anything! I am trying to keep people (and their dogs) off my lawn, as they seem to think that it's a public park meant for use as a "puppy potty". :P Brambles and thorns are perfectly fine, too, as my children play in a completely different part of the yard. Thanks for the help! :) |

| Try barberry. (Berberis thunbergii) This thorny shrub grows wild in here in Northern Vermont and may often be found in shady woods. You must prune this back to get it to fill out and it will grow faster in the light than in shade. It is widely used as an ornamental but some consider it a pest as it is hard to kill. |
