Wondering if the Alaska gardeners are on this forum or the far north forum. That one seems to be mostly Canadian. I'm on the Kenai peninsula, and still waiting for spring! :) Hopefully the volcanic ash will really be good for the gardens this summer.
I live, garden and sail in Ketchikan, Alaska. I am also waiting for spring, but signs of it are around...robins, crocuses starting to open, buds forming on my roses and hydrangeas as well and my rhubard is poking through the soil. It snowed often up until a few days ago. I am planting lettuce & arugula in my greenhouse this weekend, using seed tapes I made a few weeks ago. I will transplant them outside when it really is spring. I hope to plant brussel sprouts in the greenhouse in 2-4 weeks and snow peas outside about the same time followed by potatoes about 2 weeks after that. I find it very challenging to garden in Ketchikan, especially in the colder conditions we have had the past 2 summers.
I garden in Fairbanks, home of zone 1. We posted -60 F at our house this winter. Very few things grow here as perennials, and if they do, it is usually a self-seeder. Nothing is blooming yet, but my seeds are started for the most part. You make your own seed tape, dahlfaceak?
I live within driving distance of Alaska. I live in Anchorage :) We're cleaning out the boxes now. We have strawberries and iris coming up already. Hoping the hops wintered over too.
