Veggie gardening in 'dog dirt'

There's a really sunny place in my yard that was once my dogs' "spot". Anyone have information on how to long the soil takes to neutralize, or how to safely treat the soil, so eating the crop doesn't sicken me? Or, should I just think perennials (I have several beds already).
Sadly my best friend passed on this winter.

| As long as the dog's "contribution" to the soil has aged long enough for it to start to degrade (6 months should be good), it shouldn't pose any problems. |

| I remember being told not to use Dog manure on your veggie beds as you might contact parasites from it. |
