Blackberry bushes not producing berries

| I know there are several kinds of blackberry bushes, but does anyone know if ALL blackberry bushes....say, the ones that Canadian (i.e. Ontario) garden centres sell, only produce berries on one year-old canes? From what I've read, they produce canes one year, then those canes produce berries the following year, then die, then new canes emerge. Is this the case? My friends bushes aren't producing berries and I believe they just planted them 2 years ago, so I am trying to figure out why this may be. Thanks very much for your help with this |

| You are right. Blackberries produce berries on one-year-old old canes that die after fruiting. Your friend must not cut down the new canes that sprout in the current year, because those are the ones that will bear fruit the next year. Suzanne |

Hi-I have a very large bush of black caps/blackberries that produces very few berries. I got the brush hog out 3 years ago and cut it right down to grown level and let it come back. Now it is as big as a small house and you might be able to get a hand full of berries a week. Any help? |
