New Gardener...ideas for plants that will survive in Manitoba

I've recently moved from the States to Winnipeg after marrying a Manitoban and would like to plant a flower garden at the front of our house. I've done some research on plants native to the area but thought it would be helpful to seek out the pros for some advice.

I'm considering Hydrangeas and possibly Northern Lights Tufted Hair Grass. Any other suggestions for hearty shrubs or plants that would lend an element of beauty to the front of our home?

The planting area is approx. 20' long and 4' deep in a mostly shady, west-facing area.

I'm no pro, nor from Manitoba; but I would suggest you try your local library for a book by Jim Hole called "What Grows Here?"

The Holes run a garden centre in St. Albert Alberta which is considerably north of Winterpeg, and I've found their books very helpful - hope you do too.

You should come on over to the Far North Gardening forum (zone 3 and lower) and post your query there. The forum can be kind of slow at times, but should be picking up now that the snow is quickly disappearing and Spring fever is setting in.
