I know that if you google deer resistant plants you can get a whole list of very popular plants that are for sun and shade. If you are worried about rabbits or other smaller creatures, again, I'd google it. I always plant japaleno peppers on the outskirts of my veggie gardens. Never have a rabbit problem. I guess they can smell that they're hot.

Also, if you choose native plants or hardy plants that don't require a lot of water or 'love' you have a better chance of them growing strong and not needing much fertilizer.

I am in the Manchester, NH area. I believe you a zone 4 up there. Is the area you are planning sun or shade? You mentioned a "wooded setting". Are you looking towards shrubs or perennials/annuals or a mix? Do you currently live in NH, and would you be up at the cottage fairly regularly to maintain the garden, or do you need very self-sufficient, low maintenance plants? I have a wide variety of perennials, shrubs and trees in my yard, and I also deal with deer, chipmunks, woodchucks, etc....
