shrub disease

I tried to post this on the shrub forum but I couldn't get on the forum. Guess the lines were busy. Here's my problem: I have what I think may be fire blight. The tips of the branches of my lilac and clethra are wilting and turning black. I'm hoping it isn't fire blight but something else. Any ideas? Also my Pagoda Dogwood isn't wilting but the centre of the flowers are black and dried. Any ideas what may be causing this? I'd like to catch this before it spreads to the other shrubs. Thanks. Marg

RE: shrub disease

I have a collection on clips on plant diseases and pests, that I saved from websites. This is one of them and exactly what you need to know, I think.

Bacterial Diseases:
There are two common bacterial diseases on woody ornamentals - Erwinia fire blight and Pseudomonas bacterial blight (also called bacterial canker). Fire blight attacks only plants in the Rosaceae family, such as apple, pear, cotoneaster, and rose. Bacterial blight or canker attacks many species; lilac and all Prunus species such as flowering cherry are highly susceptible. Once twigs dry out, it is virtually impossible to isolate the bacteria in the diagnostic lab, even though the symptoms may be strongly suggestive of bacterial disease. Only fungicides containing copper will help control bacterial diseases, but these may cause spotting or burn of young shoots in spring if applied at higher rates or under slow drying conditions. Prune and dispose of dead wood, disinfecting pruners as you go.

I did finally get to post this on the shrub forum and was told that it was because of the amount of rainfall and the hard freezes we have gotten. I went out and checked after I posted, (and it had been fairly dry for a few days), and there was less of the blackening. I keep checking. I did prune the lilac tho. The rest seems to be getting better. Thanks for the link you provided oilpainter. I have already added it to my 'collection'. I found it very informative. Marg
