Recommendations for a small tree to plant on exposed SW corner

Posted by prism99 Western WI (My Page) on

of house? I'm thinking it needs to stay 20 feet tall or less, and I can plant it about 9 feet from the house foundation. This is a very exposed area that gets wind, and the summer sun is brutal in the afternoons. I'd like the tree to provide dappled shade for the flower bed on this corner. We are on 3 acres in a rural setting.

Any suggestions other than a crabapple? (And if you have a specific crabapple suggestion, I would be most interested in that.)

Prism:

You might do some reading about a tree called Chinese Pistache. This may fit your criteria except potentially being larger than 20 feet. My only question is whether or not it can handle the wind.

Good luck.

Kate

Here is a link that might be useful: Pistacia chinensis

Thanks! Never heard of this one. I will research it.

I have a snowbird hawthorne. It has beautiful dark green leathery leaves and is a hybrid without the thorns. It grows to about 18 ft tall and 16 ft wide and is hardy to zone 3.

Slow-growing Amelanchia canadiensis might work well.
Off-white flowers in June, blueberry-like fruit in late July, birds love them... and the fruit makes great jam!
