a lawn question...about clover

In our town, all herbecides and insectisides have been illegal for several years. So of course almost everybody in town's lawns are starting to look lame and shabby.

I would like to fill in the patches with clover, but none of the garden stores carry clover seed. Does anyone have a clue where I could buy a big bag of the stuff?

I live in Quebec Canada. Thanks in advance, Yvette

Hi, Yvette! I love clover. If I were keeping a lawn, that's what I'd plant. Hmmm. I might think about it anyway!

I found an article for you that strongly suggests planting Dutch White Clover (Trifolium repens):

http://counties.cce.cornell.edu/rensselaer/HORT/Fact sheets/fs07522x white clover.htm

Here's another article about using White Clover in lawns:

And I also (drumroll, please) found you an Eastern Canadian source for the seed. The place is called Homestead Organics. I'm attaching a link to their pdf catalogue.

Good luck. If this source doesn't work for you, I hope someone else can help. Maybe your local garden centre can get some in for you.

Here is a link that might be useful: Homestead Organics catalogue

I'm hoping yvette sees this, so I'm bumping it up. Hope that's OK.

Hello there Yvette,

Just an idea... I know that farmers grow clover because their livestock eat it... so it might be available in one of those stores catering to farming, like TSC, a place where farm equipment is sold.

On an slightly unrelated note, last year I tried black clover, it really is black - and it is really cool.

Yvette,
I live in Ottawa and replaced the grass in my backyard with white clover that I bought at Ritchie's Feed & Seed Inc. Here's its URL http://www.ritchiefeed.com/
Their contact address is on that site. You can ask if they would ship the seeds to you.

Good luck.

RE: a lawn question...about clover

Yvette,
Just a little warning. I also live in Ottawa and the house on the opposite side of the street about 4 doors down was sold 2 summers ago and professionally landscaped. They used clover for the front lawn (a white variety) and it was fine until the owners either did not have time to mow the lawn or were away. The clouds of white clover were pretty until the lawn was cut, but last summer white clover was turning up in everyone's lawns and gardens. I am still ripping it out weekly, and not too pleased to be having to. I guess you must make sure it doesn't go to seed.
Northerner.
