daphne mezereum: ?winterkilled

I've had daphne for 15 years, plus or minus. Transplanted the seedlings that appeared, all over the garden, yard, gave to friends.
They are all dead, in different locations, sun, etc.
Now, the ones I gave to a friend across the valley were beautiful this year. (She said, that's the beauty of 'companion' gardening--I'll get seedlings from her)
I can only guess that the lack of snowcover did it--a particularly lethal period very cold, no snow. Although I thought we'd had that in the past.
Did anyone else lose daphne? Could it be some disease I've never heard of?
