Water and Musk melons up north

| I want to plant some melons this year. I have tried in the past with minimal results. Anyone have any suggestions to help with our limited growing season??

| We have had fairly good success even in zone 3. Would usually sow the seeds direct in the garden around May 20-28th. Or, better yet, start late April or early May in peat pots and then transplant. I think it's important to choose short season varieties (ex: Alaska, Fastbreak, etc our local garden catalogue states as 65 days) which are smaller than store bought, but very aromatic and sweet. Good soil, frequent watering and full sun probably help as well. |

| I don't know... I tried 2 years ago and got a small soccer sized melon - then the blasted deer ate it! So, I'm trying again this year. My friend starts his as plants about now and he always has nice sized melons. I start from seed - maybe my problem? So, good luck and let us know if you have success this year - I'll do the same. | Start your seeds in doors and plant them in Kozy Koats in the garden to get a head start. |
