Looks like an African Lily... but...

Ok, so here's my delima. I have flowers that are new this year, but I didn't plant them. They were planted by the previous owner, but I think they planted them late since they didn't show up last year. (They were planted 1.5-2 yrs. ago.)

Anyway, they are dead ringers for african lilies, but I'm in zone 3. From everything I've read, they will not survive in the ground beyond a zone 6. They haven't bloomed yet, but their buds are identical to the pics I've seen.

Does anyone know if they are more hardy than people realize, or if perhaps it has a hardy cousin that could be mistaked for it?

Just some distinct characteristics: Long narrow tiger-lily-green leaves (about 4/plant), tall flower stalks (some almost 3 ft. tall!), and a rounded hershy kiss shaped, and sized, flowerbud that has lots of little buds inside it that show up as the bud ripens and the skin thins away. All of mine seem to be mauve to purple in color.

If anyone has some ideas, let me know! Thanks!

How about some of the larger alliums (ornamental onions)? There's no problem wintering a great number of allium species in zone 3, and your description sounds fit in every respect.
For example:
Allium hollandicum, sphaerocephalon, alflatunense
