Can anyone tell me what this is?

I would like to know what kind of flower this is? It is about 3 - 4 feet tall and the bud looks exactly like a medium sized pine cone. when it blossoms, (or at least begins to blossom) it is a bright yellow and looks very similar to Bee balm. The plant is very erect and sturdy and has bracts of heavy almost waxy leaves similar to the leaves on coneflowers but lighter in color and lots more of them.

Sounds like Centaurea macrocephala. I saw it for the first time at Rurals Roots in Bobcaygeon. I loved it so much I got one for my garden.

Cassie,

Thank you soooo much, that's it. Spot on from my description and even without a picture. I appreciate your answer. They are lovely and I had never seen them before. We have some here at work and now I have to have some for my gardens as well.

Sandee
