I'm in Calgary and just read that lapins cherry trees are growing well in Edmonton .I'm interesting in all kinds of fruit trees that are of the B.C. kind ( large fruit) I know pears and plum grow here but are the tiny variety .I hear appricots grow here but often die ..Why do they die ?? how to prevent this ??
what about nectarines ?

xcaret, You said on the other thread that you tried growing Lapins in your other house that you had inside. You have ambition so I would think you really want to try again at your new place if it's not too late. Right? First of all I think if you find any Lapins cropping and growing in Edmonton that they are lucky cases of a good year and individuals living in a lucky micro-climate where they don't have much frost or nasty chinooks weather being farther from the Rockies. I don't want to detract you from trying but temperature changes from chinooks are not good for any kind of cherry except maybe (pin) cherry "prunus pennsylvania" which as a cherry species is very cold adaptable. I think if I was you I might look for the pin cherry orchards in your area and pick your own by the pound. If you like them then get named varieties pin cherry 'jumping pound' and plant one. Then next year try learning bud grafting and try budding either Lapins or Stella as Konrad did. Pin cherry grows very fast. Then every winter selectively burlap those sweet cherry spurs and remove before blossoming. If it looks like frost is on the way then re-apply a fabric material the type used to protect fall crops on tomatoes. Maybe some day you will be telling us.
