can anyone explain this???

okay - yesterday i added black color-enhanced mulch that was in my garage for about two months to a group of pansies i planted in early may. this morning, there were two pink finger like things growing out of the mulch that were about six inches long and about an inch thick. i thought they were snakes. being new to the "country" i waited for my husband to get up and went out with him (about 1 hour later). they were already shriveled up and looked dead and were definitely some kind of plant. any explanation?????

It's probably some sort of mold or fungi. Try looking on Tom Volk's Fungi page. You'll have to do a google search for it. M

Sounds like a slime mold, their fruiting bodies decay very rapidly.
