When to Transplant?

| My search came up with Z5's & 6's;( I also posted this query on Midwest Gardening) I'm colder than that and here is my quandry: I have a rose bush that is sprouting new shoots in UN-wanted areas! I can't just rip/tear out the new shoots; for it's sprouting in the midst of Penstammon, Delphiniums, and Foxgloves. I'll have to remove the three of them above, before I can tackle the problem. Can I do it now, so they get a good RE-start on the new placements?
I'm thinkin' fall or spring is the "proper" time tho; Sept. perhaps. I'm afraid the three species just will not have enuf time to RE-aclimate themselves; I will wait of course for this heat to pass. Today is in 80's; but it will return to the 90's by Sun. HELP PLEASE!!!!! |

| Well, while this is likely not the 'proper' answer, I transplant things all season long. Just 2 weeks ago I pulled up 2 gigantic hostas (that were in bloom) and split them down into 19 (yeah nineteen!!) plants. All survived without a hitch, and are still flowering! I have moved rosebushes (shocked it, but it is now 2' high and happy in its new home), bushes (blue spruce, mugo, etc), every perennial that annoyed me in its present place...you get the hint!! LOL!! You are right, spring and fall are the ideal, but I say if you are not happy with them now, move 'em. Water them like crazy for 3-4 days, and I bet they will be happy in their new home. Hope this helps. |

| Same here - just cut down with a spade a ways back from and all around the rootball, so as to get all of the rootball without damaging the roots too much, and then water well (and frequently, if it needs it) in its new spot. If you're moving an entire plant, and don't do too much root damage, it won't even know it's been moved. |

| I agree. Go for it. I know a "tree guy" (landscaper) who says that Fall is the best time to plant trees. I would think bushes would be the same. |
