What do you sow in the fall?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can recommend any good seeds that can be planted in the fall that would produce decent spring plants/blooms? I'd like to sow a few things that might end up jump starting the garden in the spring. Any suggestions? What do you sow in the fall?

Lisa

Sure you can. That how mother nature did it before we started trying to control her. LOL

Most of the self seeders you can do. Check out the WS forum, as there are hundreds you can seed early. The WS method actually seems to improve the probability of germination though.

Here is a link that might be useful: Winter Sowing forum

I'm going to sow all of my hardy perennials and biennials. It's so much easier leaving them outdoors in the winter and under snow cover, they're fine. I sow them in pots though, I don't scatter the seed on the ground.

Hi Newbi, another Nova Scotian here. Pretty much anything that blooms in early spring and reseeds itself will work. Forget-me-nots are from seeds and are among my earliest bloomers. But as for early spring flowering plants I like to plant bulbs.

How about assorted POPPIES, BACHELOR BUTTONS, VIOLAS, LAMBS EARS, CALENDULA, GARLIC CHIVES, SWEET WILLIAMS, just to name a few of what comes up each year in my garden. Just remember to mark where you scatter the seeds because in spring you will not remember and start removing 'WEEDS' when they are actually your new flowers.
