pepper buds dying

I just noticed that the buds on my green pepper plants are drying up, and there is a dark, fungusy-looking area where the blossoms join the stem. The foliage looks OK, but the buds are all dead. Could this be due to inadequate air circulation? The plants are a bit crowded.
