New miniature rose - indoors or outdoors?

Posted by Vermont07 z4 VT (My Page) on

I've just been given a beautiful potted miniature rose, full of buds and new growth. I'm in Vermont and my instinct is to rush it into the ground so it can get a foothold before winter. However, my preference is to keep it indoors as a houseplant to enjoy for awhile. Is there anyway I can keep it as an indoor plant and still be able to plant it outdoors? Should I do this just before frost or keep it inside to plant next spring? In other words, can I have my cake and eat it, too? I have had great luck with these roses wintering over in cold climates where the hybrid teas can't take the cold.

RE: New miniature rose - indoors or outdoors?

Vermont07,

Mini roses are usually hardy. I think it is because they are on their own roots and in winter, they're covered by snow. I would plant it - yes, I know it's tempting to leave it inside but roses in a house often deteriorate within 1 month.
