 o
hardiness zone information

I thought you 'northern' gardeners might be interested in this information that I stumbled upon.
-----------------------------------------------
I just found an interesting web site where, it would seem, we could contribute to creating more accurate hardiness ratings for our garden plants.
I quote
"The Canadian Forest Service has embarked on an ambitious project called Going Beyond the Zones. They've set up a site where gardeners across Canada and the Northern US are encouraged to report information about the hardy plants in their gardens.
The project is a follow-up to the 2001 revision of the Canadian Plant Hardiness Zone Map. After enough information is gathered on each plant species or cultivar, a really nifty mapping program can generate a hardiness range map specific to each type. What's really needed right now are lots of gardeners to participate and report on the plants that they are growing.

Registration on the site is free and only takes a few moments. Full details about the project may be seen on the link above. Once there, select the language of your choice and the page will pop right up."

I think I will add my '2 cents worth' as time allows

Maybe someone would like to post a similar message on the 'Far North' web site. I would hate to get in trouble for multiple posts!

Here is a link that might be useful: Going Beyond the Zones

This keeps getting posted and posted and posted. I suspect by the same person who just happened to find it.

Maybe I am stupid, but I can't get any use from it at all. In fact it seems to be asking for input.

Maybe that is why people are not responding to the continued postings.

Well, jroot, I am the person that posted this message & the only other time I posted it was on the Ornamental Grass Forum.
I DID do a thorough search of this forum and found no other postings that mentioned this.
AND yes,
If you were to read my posting it does actually say
"What's really needed right now are lots of gardeners to participate and report on the plants that they are growing."
In other words 'they' are actually asking real everyday gardeners to contribute information to the data base to make something more accurate than what they have now. I kinda thought that northern gardeners would like to have some serious input in this project.

Terribly sorry to waste you time ...

achnatherum, I don't think you should be in trouble for posting on the FN forum. I report from Alaska so I only visit the FN forums and never knew anything about this government project.

Last winter we had very cold ambient (-51F) and also almost record frost penetration in the ground. There were some prunus (species of cherry) as imported from other parts of the world that continue to be invasive, even under these circumstances.
eg. European mayday, and North American pin and tart cherry.

I don't want to hurt anyones feelings but I am going to contribute information to that project.
