Compatible vines

I am beginning to research for next year's projects.... one that I would like to consider is the growing of TWO annual vines together in and up an obelisk. It seems to me that these two vines need to be similar in growing pattern so that one does not overgrow the other and thereby dominate the other negatively.

Has anyone tried to grow two annual vines together and what have you experienced regarding what are and are not compatable growing mates?

Thanks,Ron

You might try morning glory and nasturtium, unless your season is too short or cool for morning glories to bloom. This way you'd get earlier bloom from the nasturtiums, and later (summer) bloom from the morning glories.

I use morning glories and early blooming clematis.

Yes, morning glories might be a stretch to bloom here.... but not impossible.... what variety of nasturtium climber/trailer works best for you?

I wonder how clematis would fare with a nasturtium as a container/obelisk mate?

thanks,Ron

the morning glories should work for you, if you get quite a bit of sun. Mine have self seeded and come back on their own. The clems are perennial, but depending on the type it could be cut to the ground each year and would be o.k. I have had a volunteer morning glory grow in with my'etoile violete' clematis and look quite nice! A jackmannii is also very vigorous clematis and would be nice too.
