dividing perennials

I live in the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and I have some stella d'oro day lilies and lady's mantle in my front garden that need dividing. I can't do it in the spring because there are tulips growing there as well that will be damaged if I dig them up then. I broke my wrist in August so I'm just now able to start gardening again. Is it too late to divide them this fall?

It's not too late - just make sure that your divisions have a good clump of roots / rhizomes and water them in well in their new location.

Actually I prefer moving perennials in late Fall as I've found very little transplant shock as the plants are semi-dormant by then.
