Those are good choices. For trees maybe include the Golden Willow-a fast grower much like the Laurel leaf willow. It can take over in an urban setting but in this case it might be a good choice-nice golden bark and twigs. Also towering aspen, with it's narrow columnar form might come in handy. I don't know if the pin oak is entirely hardy-it might be a zone4 plant-maybe try bur oak (work of caution: bur oak is a VERY slow grower and doesn't like to be moved due to a deep tap root). Maples, alders and Lindens tend to tolerate wet soil. Also for the dry areas try the columnar Caragena "Sutherland". It's very hardy, drought tolerant and underutilized.

Tamarack would grow there. The native ones for sure. Don't know how the other ones do .

have you studied any of the viburnums? I know they grow wet but i am not sure of the hardiness. The double fires are a very beautiful tree like shrub that will grow right next to a water feature. As the other person said tamaracks are a water lover.They lose their needles in winter. Conifer but not ever green. Hem lock ? Johnny

Viburnum may work well. All the ones I know of are shrubs here, but we have native high bush cranberry, and my Red Feather's seem to be doing ok.

I like viburnum for another reason: Their fall colour isn't yellow. We don't have enough red and orange in our fall. For this same reason, I've got 24 sugar maple going into their first autumn this year.

Hemlock is nominally zone 3. But two springs ago I tried 500 mountain hemlock. I've got 50 that are still alive. Jury is out as last fall we had a very warm fall, and sudden freezes. Perhaps from this population I can start a prairie hardy hemlock variety.
