These are mostly gone at this time of the year,...they are around in mid summer.

They grow in our hardwood forest and usually begin to appear at the beginning of fall. There season is not long.
So, make friends with someone who owns a hardwood forest. And they pop up so quickly that they are overripe within a few days.

I know the puffball season is short
and we did used to have our own forest with puffballs

I must make more effort as you say to know someone not so far away form Barrie, who might have puffballs

    Do you like them yourself
ninamarie and thanks Konrad for your comment
do you get them even as far north as you are.

Yes, sometimes I collect them,...most often you see them in cow pastures, perhaps horse also. I know, horse pastures have my favored one, the wild champion, sometimes called the pink bottom or meadow mushroom.

Have not that I can think of seen the Meadow Mushroom

In cooking the puff ball myself, the only way I have prepared them is from example of others in the family

They simply slice them and fry them lightly in butter

The taste is so fabulous, Don't know what to say it is similar to
    Nothing really, Just delicious.
Never thought to put them in a soup. But I have not found any of them in years.

I live just outside Sudbury, ON. Had a real outbreak of puffballs this past summer. I personally don't like them, but many people do. Now the photo posted by Konrad of his Meadow mushroom... that is worth the hunt. I believe the proper name for this one is Agaricus, which is a delicacy. Do check a good source for ID as there are poisonous varieties.

Diane. I wasn't saying to be careful of the Puffball, but rather of the type of Agaricus you harvest, re Konrads Meadow Mushroom
