These are mostly gone at this time of the year,...they are around in mid summer.
|
They grow in our hardwood forest and usually begin to appear at the beginning of fall. There season is not long. So, make friends with someone who owns a hardwood forest. And they pop up so quickly that they are overripe within a few days.

Yes, sometimes I collect them,...most often you see them in cow pastures, perhaps horse also. I know, horse pastures have my favored one, the wild champion, sometimes called the pink bottom or meadow mushroom.

I live just outside Sudbury, ON. Had a real outbreak of puffballs this past summer. I personally don't like them, but many people do. Now the photo posted by Konrad of his Meadow mushroom... that is worth the hunt. I believe the proper name for this one is Agaricus, which is a delicacy. Do check a good source for ID as there are poisonous varieties.

Diane. I wasn't saying to be careful of the Puffball, but rather of the type of Agaricus you harvest, re Konrads Meadow Mushroom
