Tree peony question

| Would moving a tree peony at this time of year be okay?
We live in zone 5, Canada. I have one that I moved temporarily last year, as it would not bloom where it was, and it did bloom this year. However other stuff is growing around it and smothering it. I have an ideal spot in the front of the house, now that I got rid of some "builder's choice" plants. The nice double yellow tree peony would look spectacular there. However, I know that regular peonies don't like to me moved, and thus I wonder about moving it again.
I suppose that if I leave it where it is, it may be choked out and die, so the odds are not good for it as it stands today. Is it okay to move the tree peony so close to frost time?

| I moved two tree peonies last year at about this time. A free tree peony is too good to pass up They came from a garden belonging to the mother of a friend of mine. My friend got two tree peonies as well.....and there were still four left!!!The smaller one came through the winter really well, the larger(4 foot) one had some die off. This was at least in part due to the early thaw we had this spring, as it was doing all right until then.I only move peonies in the fall.....unless of course the demolition site bulldozer is advancing. Also, I bought one of Gardenimports sale priced herbacious peonies last fall....it didn't arrive until early November and it still produced one bloom for me this summer.Tree peonies are supposed to have the same planting preferences as herbaceaus peonies....or so the multitude of internet sites that I consulted before I put shovel to the ground to obtain my tree peonies last year.Good luck whenever you move it. |

| Thank you for answering my question. I thought that this would be the answer, but I wanted to make certain, since I had already moved it in the spring. I will definitely move it again this coming week. It is an amazing pastel yellow colour which will stand out beautifully at the front of the house. I have a fairly large red flower tree peony at the front also, but alas, it doesn't show up well against the red brick. Once again, thanks for your input. |
