Zephirine Drouhin

Was visiting friends in Germany this summer, and they had a wonderful climbing rose called Zephirine Drouhin. The aroma was very strong and there were no thorns.
Could/would this grow in my zone 5a?
We do not have any roses yet, and very sandy soil, with much pine..

thank you,
Martha zucchini

RE: Zephirine Drouhin

Martha: Zephirine is available in Canada - try Pickering Nurseries or other "serious" rose place. We are also Zone 5a (or 4B) just outside Ottawa.

The older roses are pretty hardy. You should be able to grow shrub roses without protection. I have Blanc Double de Coubert, Hansa and Therese Bugnet, no winter protection at all.
