Moving to Northern Idaho or Missoula Montana

I will be at a loss. I have been reading my Sunset Western Garden book, and now that is very little help. I am spoiled by a rich palette of plants from which to chose.

I am looking for all sorts of things to grow.

Hardy fruit and nut trees, ornamental trees and shrubs.

.....and of course, perennials and annuals. The growing season is long there in the summer, as the days are quite long, so tomatoes are in.

I don't know what zone they are and I know I will be looking for "micro-climates", if I don't have one, I will make one.

Retirement here in California is pricy, so to move to a less hospitable place at a lower cost of living would be frugal.

I WILL check in at the Master Gardeners at the University of Idaho, but if anyone has any other ideas from your own experience, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Evelyn

one nice thing......

One nice thing. I won't have to deal with the long, long drought each summer. I will actually have moisture in the ground! That will be a new experience. among others...

Northern Idaho is more tempurate and gets more precipitation.

Why don't you move to Victoria, BC

Or Oak Harbor on the US side for example... Many US citizens retire in southwesern BC because of the extremely temperate climate. Bulb season has started already.

Cheers

Hi evelyn, I live in north Idaho myself, and tho I fantasize about having a garden filled with tropicals, you can manage a very nice garden here also. I am on Pend Oreille (pond or ay)Lake. It is beautiful. What area are you planning on retiring to? christa

Hello, all!

And thank you for your hints. A decision has not been made as to the exact location. Any really good suggestions?

Evelyn
