Winter protection for roses

I am wondering whether mulching roses for winter protection should be done before or after the ground freezes. Thanks for any info.

I've always done it just before/around ground freeze-up. But I hear it can attract mice into your mulch if the ground stays too warm underneath. I've never had a problem with mice so I just did mine this past weekend. The ground is freezing now, but not by much.

The best winter protection is to originally plant your roses with the graft 6/7 in. deep. And then hill them up for the winter. The more you do the better off you are. Rai
