How much longer do we have to freeze????

Warning Warning I am rambling here.....LOL.

I don't know about anyone else but I am tired of this freezing weather. At the very least we should have had some snow with it being this cold here in Pahrump. Ha.

The whole town of Pahrump (and towns surrounding us) lost power on Saturday. That was fun. Not. That goodness for my fireplace...and we had just bought some firewood the day before that.

I wonder how my garden is going to react to it-will I have any plants left? I have/had a beautiful palm tree that looks so sad now.

My hummingbirds feeders freeze during the day as well as the night time...I took them in yesterday morning so they could defrost by the fireplace....the birds liked having something to eat again in the afternoon...it is always funny to watch them attempt to drink at their feeders when it is frozen. I took it in one feeder last night and I will return it after it hits 40. LOL. That just doesn't sound right.

All right, I'm done rambling...can't wait for a heatwave of 50. HA. How are you all doing?

Sorry it's my fault, I wanted to learn about nevada gardening to help out the inlaws and look what happens EVERYBODY catches my cold weather, LOL its kinda like a bad cold and now I have infected everybody.
My wife talked to her mom Saturday but I did'nt get to hear what caused your power outage?
The inlaws dont have a fire place to keep warm and I guess they both have really bad colds, They ended up having to go to the hospital sunday having no heat made the colds worse,
After being pumped with some fluids and tons of drugs they are doing better.
Poor humming birds, Do they have like a little humming bird shelter where they can go to get a warm meal and a hot cot. Sorry I've been cooped up to long going nuts, But really (this might sound stupid) Dont they migrate? I mean the humming birds I already know that inlaws do........LOL
Hope your plants will be ok.

    Hello Beca,

I too am tired of this cold weather. I've officially given up on the tomatoes in the greenhouse. They were hanging on until this last weekend but this was too much even with the heating pad going in there. We're going to have to figure something else out for next year.

Thank goodness for our fireplace/wood stove that isn't 100 percent but does work now. Our heat pump would have really struggled heating our house with the temps down in the low tewenties but the fireplace had no problem.

I went out and looked at the damage to plants and was quite disappointed. Besides those tomatoes there is the octopus agaves that we had high hopes for. Thier leaves feel like mush, I don't even know if they are alive. The myoporum that was doing great and spreading all summer looks awful, Aloe ferox is toast, and even the acacia redolens looks badly damaged and it is supposed to be hardy to 15 degrees F. Cassia Phyllodinea of which we have a couple may be gone also. Now to figure out wether to replant the same thing or move on to something else that can handle the furnace like conditions of summer and the sub freezing winters.

At least it's getting a degree or two warmer every day now. And we never lost power like you and Beaver's inlaws in Pahrump.

A quick note reply here. We were woken up early this morning and told by emergency services that Dan volunteers for that 3/4's of the town is without power AGAIN.

Sooo I am thrilled it hasn't happened here and I really do hope it doesn't...I wanted to get the news out to Beaver just in case his inlaw's power is out again.

We were just told that the power outage today is weather related (this time). Still...3'4's of the downtown area is without power and it's only 30 now at 8:15.

So, hopefully your inlaw's aren't affected by this outage, Beaver. If they are....they can go to any casino or shelter to get warm,etc...one of these days I would like to meet them!! My husband is volunteering at the sherriff's dept again.

Oh-We found out that the outage on Saturday was caused by some morons who thought it would be cute to shoot out the power line to Las Vegas!!!! Unbelievable to think we have these kinds of people out here.

Maria: I haven't looked to closely at my plants yet. My palm tree got hit bad with the first frost in Oct/Nov...I am really hoping it'll make it through this. My container roses look like ----- now. We had 2" of ice on spa yesterday. We have the filters on the pool at night...then we switched to the spa...after breaking up the ice,etc...got some foam layered boards to put on top of it and plywood on top of that with cinder blocks too. Hopefully, it'll keep it from getting ice again. Pool & spa equipment is fine.
We did have a sprinkler valve bust yesterday...Dan quickly fixed that. Hopefully this is the last of the sloppy work by an unlicensed landscaper who knows nothing about installing sprinklers. We have learned from his mistakes.

My husband Dan is from Minnesota....he is beginning to do things to the house & yards for this cold weather that normally would be done there and not here. LOL.

Beaver-please take your cold weather back...we have had enough!! Oh, it is funny but I've had these 3-4 hummingbirds at the house ever since we moved here in 2005. No hummer shelter yet...LOL. I thought they would migrate too. I suppose they are spoiled now.

Take care and stay warm Maria...geez we will laugh at this in July.

Brutal cold spells will continue through February. Frequent freezes will continue through March (as in freezing almost every night). Just enough freezing to drive you nuts will continue through April. Then it will be hot.

Hold on to your hats people you wont believe this, I am extending my super sale of cold cruddy weather as my supplier has dumped a new shipment on my door step but you will have to act fast cause I am thinking my supply will only last for a couple more months, So act fast and a fresh supply of frozen crud could be yours, And as an added bonus shipping is FREE....
All the stupid ice keeps messsin up our lines and making it hard for me to get online.
Becca that would be pretty neat to meet up with you and your husband sometime in the future, My wife and I will be back in march for two days but we will be really busy, First day I want to walk alot of vegas and take alot of pictures and then that night we have a Stevie Nicks concert and day two I plan on dying from exhaustion, Day three back home.
No the only power outage the inlaws have talked about was the first one so I guess they got lucky, I think with the colds they had one more power outage probably would have landed them in the hospital for a couple of days instead of the one day they spent their already. I will tell them about the casino's being open I guess they thought about going to warm up but they figured they were closed too since the whole towns power was out, Thank you for the info...
    Stay warm it's almost over....LOL

LOL Beaver!!! You are way too sweet to offer us some snow and cold weather. I will pass this time. We are beginning to warm up a "little bit" here. How long will it last? Who knows...probably just a couple of days. Hey now you have your snowy weather...and remember you asked for it and now you have it (and way more).
Sorry the snow is interfering with your lines to the internet though-that sucks.
One of these days we will meet...probably when it is 118 degrees here and we will be wanting snow. Yikes-I'd better not ask for that-it might just happen.
