Container gardening in Las Vegas in the winter

Hi All, I want vegetables, peppers and herbs fresh from the garden. I think most here will agree the best way to do that is grow them myself.

I have a 10x20 open patio on the north side of my home. I would like to grow between late September and Mid-May when I head back north. I have drip sprinklers installed near by where the container would be.

My novice questions are, what can I grow here during the time I'm here? How deep would the soil have to be for the plants recommended?

I'm sure there is a world of others I don't know to ask yet.
