Puncturevine / Goathead overtaking area...HELP!!

| I have tried Spectracide Weed and Grass Killer, and that hasn't even made a dent in this nasty weed overtaking part of my yard. I *could* try diggging it out, but right now there is so much that I'm not sure that is feasible, and living in the desert means no burning. Anyone have any luck with a specific herbicide that will help get rid of this terrible plant??
we literally noticed it was covering an area last weekend, and this weekend, it has grown 2x the height, and is now creeping slowly into where I plant my veggies!!!

| Call your local County Extension Agent. I believe that Goathead is classified as a noxious weed, and is best eradicated as soon as possible. You may even be able to burn the stuff at this time of year--depends on local regulations. My guess is you may have to resort to something much stronger like Tordon or Triox (if those are even still legal), and it might even be that the county folks will come out and spray some sort of weed killer for you. A friend of mine (okay, so he's a total pyromaniac) swears by his flamethrower (one designed specifically for killing vegetation). Lisa |

| Roundup works on it just fine. In fact I haven't seen the plant it won't get rid of. I hate this weed too - it is the usual culprit behind flat tires in our kids bicycles. It also isn't difficult to pull out by hand, just try to get it before it sets more seeds that sprout to still more weeds. Maria |

| The weed from H E double L. And it has so my guises. When it has lots of water and nice soil, it grows high and green with really big (well, relatively) leaves. And on down the spectrum to tiny/tiny flat gray clumps, in really sparse areas. It's rampant here on our property but only in selected places, which are mostly where the ground has been disturbed. This is our second summer here and last summer I didn't catch on that I needed to DO something, so it's out of control in some places. I spent hours and hours this spring trying to burn it with a flamethrower but it's not eager to burn (yet everything else is). If you wait until there are green seeds, it's too late to burn it, as the plant itself will be charcoal (eventually) but the little green nasties just go bouncing around as happy as ever. I've tried roundup, I've tried flamethrowing, I've tried hand digging (you have to pry them up, at least in our gritty soil you do). And I still have way too many. I'm hoping that next spring if I get on them earlier it will help. What doesn't help is that they are all along our dirt roadway across from our driveway and I can't do anything about that. I heard or read of someone who'd take an old carpet foam (like they put under wall-to-wall carpet) and walk all over it in an infested area, to get rid of the seeds before (or after) eradicating the plant. But my affected areas are too big - I'd have to get an army to march around. Any new suggestions? (this thread is from last year) Thanks! |
