Australian Willow Tree

I just posted this question on the Southwestern Gardening forum but thought I would try here as well. Does anyone have an Australian Willow Tree? I'm in Las Vegas and want to replace 2 Queen Palms with 2 of the Australian Willow trees but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them. From what I've read online, they should do well here but I'm having a hard time finding any at the nurserys here. Star doesn't carry them and Moon Nursery and Plant World have very small trees (last spring Plant World had big gorgeous ones, but I decided to do the Queen Palms at the time). Moon Nursery said they're not great, but I never trust what they say as they have given me completely wrong information from in the past. I would really apprciate any advice! Thanks,
Sharon

RE: Australian Willow Tree

Hello Sharon,

I don't know if you're still around - I've been busy at work and haven't been keeping up with this site but in case you are there I think it is great that you are looking to replace you Queen Palms. They really don't like it here in Las Vegas. When you say Australian willow two different trees come to mind for me Geijera parviflora which I don't have but which is supposed to be a great tree and I've seen them at Plant World and Acacia Salicina which I have and like a lot. I think the Geijera is supposed to be a better tree because it is more wind resistant but I do like the Acacia S. because it is a beautiful tree. The problem with it is that with too much water it grows too dense and can get knocked over in the wind. I'm trying not to water mine too much and will consider thinning it if it gets a lot of dense growth.

RE: Australian Willow Tree

Hi, I just checked in and was pleasantly surprised to see a response! Actually, I'm trying to decide between both of those trees. I worried about the Salicina because of the wind, we sure get a lot of wind here and it will be in an exposed location in the yard. I still haven't pulled the queens yet. I finally have them looking great, but I know in spring they'll be back to looking horrible again so I will figure out what the replace them with then. I added a bunch of Windmill Palms around them and the windmills really helped the queens to look better. Thank you again for your response! Sharon
