WOW!!! Nevada has made it!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about the rest of you but I had given up on this ever happening!! Thanks to dirt-dew for posting about it:):) I am learning what grows here (alot does) and some plants that don't like it here. Although it depends on where it is on your land and if it is in a container or in the ground (God forbid)...I have three 8x5 vegetable raised beds that are growing like crazy now. Getting zuchinni's daily (NO!!), yellow squash, basil, green peppers, anaheim peppers, cumcumbers and tomatoes are coming up strong too. They are out in full sun all day here. We do have a drip mist system which is wonderful!! Also have containers full of beautiful roses, lavender, rosemary, alyssum, a lemon tree, fruit trees (peach, apple, appricot). Picked the most delicious peaches a few weeks ago. My backyard also has several cactus trees, an olive tree and a palm tree too and honeysuckle and virginia creeper vines growing on the back fences. Soon my husband will be installing a model garden train along the backyard in front of the fence too. It will have two trestles and will run along the back and side yard. That will have to wait for September/October. Front yard has a dry creek bed that I love...has red yuccas, mexican sage, salvia, other plants I can't remember but they look natural along the creek bed. (Even the weeds look natural LOL)

I'm up in the Virginia Highlands (Virginia City) and I'm slowly learning what works and what doesn't.....
Lilacs and believe it or not, fruit trees are doing great!
Went to the Washoe Nursery (Dept. of Forestry) and am currently planting wild roses, black locusts, indian blankets, more sand cherries, and caragana.
Tomatoes, strawberries, herbs and peppers are very happy!
Greenhouse is shut down until I can figure out a way to keep it cooler.
OKAY, big question, any other gardeners in the area believe rabbits are God's curse on domesticated gardening?
I can ramble for days.....YEAH WE HAVE A FORUM!!!!!!!!

Hooray! Glad to see others who are excited about gardening in our challenging area! I'm in the Spanish Springs area of Sparks. We've only been here a year, and had absolutely nothing in the back yard when we moved in. Spent loads of time putting in drippers in the back. Planted lots of crabapples (most are doing great), a few cherries, plums, apples, and aspens. I have a couple of vegetable beds; zucchinis are doing great (actually came to this site to check out recipes for them!), tomatoes look great-another week or two before my Early Girls get red, maybe? Snap peas are starting to dry out, but Italian peppers look good. Strawberries doing well---I put an old screen door over them to provide shade/keep birds away!
~We get lots of rabbits here, but so far they haven't got into my beds, and they haven't caused damage. The yellowjackets and red ants bug me more.

Okay...so in the dark of winter we Northern Nevadans can meet somewhere and swap ideas--weather permitting, of course! I'm pretty much on a straight line between Molly and Cara, down in the older, warmer flatlands of Sparks (near the Western Village casino/Sierra Sid's truck stop).

I don't have rabbits or squirrels. I do have birds that eat our Virginia creeper berries and the (inedible rootstock) cherries, then poop purple poop all over my laundry. I also have black ants, mostly the small ones, but LOTS of them, and they swarm and bite if I step on an anthill. No yellowjackets this year, although we had a nest last year in one of my compost piles. I also have lots and lots of honeybees, bumblebees, big thumblebees and itty bitty microbees happily cruising the flowers. I love sitting and just watching the bees. The biggest pest is probably the local raccoon, who tears up my pond once a year in September. This year I'm going to put the wire up in August, BEFORE the little bastrich comes looking for nonexistent fish.
