what would you do with these 2 lemon trees?

I have 2 lemon trees in pots on a sheltered patio. These trees were planted by my grandmother from seeds about 5 years ago from lemons that came from an unknown variety which is about 10 feet tall at maturity. This summer the lemon trees really took off! I was going to plant them out in the ground in the spring but they are growing soooo fast now that I am thinking about planting them now. They are about 4 1/2 feet tall now and growing! Should I take measures to curb their growth until the spring or should I just go ahead and plant them in the ground now and do my best to protect them over the winter?

I live in an area that the trees would require a lot of due dilligence to overwinter them. It is the High Desert in Southern California where we often get VERY fast winds and the nights can often be in the teens followed by days in the 60s. The area I live in is just like Las Vegas.

Hi, Sounds like it is a little colder there than what I've experienced in Henderson, or when I lived in LV. Are there others in your community that are growing lemons in their gardens? I notice other gardens, and placement of specific plants to see if I have a similar microclimate in my garden, when I contemplate adding something new. So let's assume that it is 'iffy' if they will do well because of the cold. You can keep them protected for the time being (the winter), and purchase an outside thermometer that will record the coldest temp of the day. You have to go out and check it daily I was told, and then you will have the specifics for your garden environment, without taking any chances of losing them. Where I am it is a little colder then LV. Recently I was told to place lemons against the north wall, as they will receive late afternoon sun, which would heat up the wall and add warmth through the winter. Others wrap on christmas lights, plug them in, and they remain on the lemon tree all winter. Hope this offers some help. ~ Laura Gardens In Desert

I agree with you gardensindesert! My citrus in las vegas grows on the north wall with a southern exposure to the sun. Same thing with my bougainvillea. It also makes for a good winter veggie garden:)
