There are two dietes species that carry the common name butterfly iris. The rhizomatous plants in this genus, too, are known as fortnight lilies because their bloom crops come in two-week periods.

Most know Dietes vegata as butterfly iris. This tough perennial has rich- green, erect, swordlike foliage and white, butterflylike flowers with blue and yellow markings.

The plants flower in spring, then off and on summer into fall. The plants also are self-sowers, and there are the rewards of additional plants.

Partial sun and a fertile, well-draining soil are ideal. I've discovered a more regular supply of water encourages better performance.

D. bicolor, sometimes called African iris and less often butterfly iris, has similar but more slender foliage that is not as erect and is a paler green.

Pale, somewhat cupped, yellow flowers with maroon-brown spots emerge from the elegant clumps late spring-summer. This plant takes more sun.

I enjoy growing both of these easy-care plants. And both took their time in blooming. However, D. bicolor, the yellow bloomer, took at least three years to flower in our garden.
