Roses, a couple hours east of Sparks

We just bought a house out in nowhere a couple hours east of Sparks. It was a rental property. The soil seems to have been an ancient sand dune. There are roses but they look about 50% dead.

I have had a lot of plants over the decades but never roses. What should I do right now?

Right now, if you do anything, mound soil over the bases of the rose canes, but don't do anything else. Start by cutting back all the dead wood (but ONLY dead wood) in February or March, and do the "real" pruning once you see leaves and buds start to emerge, probably in April. As in little bits of life.

Roses either thrive or die in this area, depending on the variety and the conditions. There isn't much in between.
