Not a really good year.

Been a while since I've posted anything so I figure today is as good as any.

The roses, veggies (tomatoes in particular) were really crappy this year. I think what is going on is that about 10 years ago since I really fortified the sand that is Johnson Lane and haven't done much since then.

But.......what is interesting is 2011 is the first year I've ever planted winter squash and and I got some very nice Acorn, Spaghetti and even some Turk's Turbans!

The tomatoes however, were pathetic.

A couple years ago I brought back a hedge apple from Iowa and this year I have six hedge apple trees, albeit only 3' tall. All I need to do is live out another 10 years and I might actually have Nevada hedge apples! Supposed to be decent spider deterrents so one day I might see how all that works out.

What else........

My at row of least three Tamarisk species are doing very well and have proven to be an established home for White Crowned sparrows, Towhees and Lesser Gold Finches. A couple woodpeckers seem to like the Tamarisk as well.

I now have 11 different cacti growing very well and I am having to add extra pads to the burn pile in the spring. Three (opuntia) are from central California and the apparently have no issue with Norther Nevada.

If anyone likes bamboo, I have Silver Stripe growing out my ears. I would highly recommend Silver Stripe for the climate. It is not very invasive and the the culms have proven very easy to transplant. I have done no sand fortification. This stuff seems to thrive wherever it is planted.

Happy New Years to all.

Dan

RE: Not a really good year.

Hi drahme
I don't check the Nevada forum very often any more, it is
so quit hear every key stroke seems to echo.
My tomatoes have done vary good the last couple of years.
But with the wet winters and cold springs, my pickels and
squash have been a bust, the earwigs have been out of control, and eat the seedlings befor they have a chance.

And a very happy new year to you.(and all)
James

PS I don't have a burn pile, because I am a compost whacko
and hoard (stuff) for my compost bins.
