New Entry Patio Needs Container Plants

mcsix

After fighting our shady, cedar-tree-bordered front yard for ten years we gave up and have had a 15-foot in diameter entry patio installed. My hope is to use plants in containers to turn it into a beautiful, colorful spot all year. The only plant we have so far is a star jasmine. After a day at the Flower and Garden Show, I'm feeling overwhelmed. One plant that caught my eye was the Whipcord Western Red Cedar. Would it grow in a container in part shade or shade? Any other suggestions for plants would be much appreciated!
